REPLAY: How to Break a Heart Workshop

Watch now!

Hi friends! Here is the replay from last night’s workshop! You can follow along with our referenced poems here.

If you were there live, I’d LOVE to know what you thought (or read anything you generated during the exercises) in the comments.

In class, we discussed:

  • Using concrete, sensorial, and “bent” language to achieve catharsis

  • How to add tension by “troubling the water”

  • Techniques to surprise or even shock a reader

  • Achieving emotional affect via breath and white space.

Here’s what people said about last night:

So impressed with the caliber of this workshop! —Amber

I love how Joy teaches me intimacy with language. I feel more empowered to write with the understanding she provides. —Sarah

Beautiful. No notes, so enjoyed stretching my creative brain with the poems Joy shared and with the community she brings together. —Julia

This class was a treasure chest of poems and prompts and techniques and Joy is a gem of a teacher. What a wonderful community to be a part of. — Stephanie

My favorite workshop of Joy’s so far. The poems left me shattered and pieced back together. I found the specificity of the techniques to be very applicable. —Abby

So excellent. Joy put so much thought and care into this workshop. She did such a wonderful job framing and contextualizing. Not to mention her multiple examples as well as her technical, applicable, tangible guidance. Couldn’t be happier. —Lauren

P.S. Don’t forget the prompt we started in workshop is due for our monthly HW on March 31st. On the last day of the month, I’ll send you a paid thread where you can share and comment on others’ work. Can’t wait to read what you write. xxx
